Substances of Abuse commonly treated at Casa Capri Recovery: Co-occurring Conditions: Women struggling with addiction to alcohol and drugs may also be experiencing co-occurring conditions (also known as dual diagnosis) such as: depression, anxiety, unprocessed trauma, codependency, as well as relational & attachment issues. These conditions can complicate the recovery process and it is important for them to be identified and addressed during the substance abuse treatment experience. Co-occurring Conditions commonly treated at Casa Capri Recovery:

The term substance abuse indicates the early stages of addiction. Substance abuse pertains to the stage in the disease process when a person begins using drugs and alcohol in an unhealthy manner. Frequency and quantity of use may escalate, and the user may begin to lose the power of choice.

“Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors.

Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in
behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.”

~Definition of Addiction as defined by The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) 2011

Addiction is a progressive disease in that it always gets worse, never better. In the case of women, the progression happens much more quickly. Women lack the ability to metabolize alcohol and drugs at the same rate as their male counterparts and because of other biological factors, require much less of the substance before experiencing adverse effects. Women are often faced with judgment and lack of understanding regarding their illness, and societal stigmas have historically negatively influenced a woman’s decision to seek out help for their condition.

Women suffering with substance use disorders often blame themselves and believe that they should be able to simply stop. Internalized shame and guilt associated with the disease perpetuate the cycle of addiction.
